Check engine light
The engine-management system constantly monitors a large number of inputs and systems. When it detects a reading outside the expected range, it records the information and usually turns on the check-engine light.
Because the light covers so many systems, on its own it does not tell you which part has failed. It can be related to areas such as emissions-related systems, sensors, ignition, fuel delivery, air measurement, engine-management faults or other monitored systems.
A diagnostic trouble code is a starting point for testing, not automatically a shopping list for replacement parts. The description attached to a code names the system reporting the fault, not proof that a particular component needs replacing.
